"Knowing about some of these magicians will help you enjoy magic."

Famous Magicians

One of the wonderful parts of magic is its colorful and interesting history. Magic and magicians go back to the earliest recorded history. We find hieroglyphics of magicians performing the cups and balls trick.

For most of us our first encounter with magicians is on television. Mark Wilson pioneered magic on television during the sixties. His Magic Land of Alakazam introduced many kids to the wonderful world of magic every week. His Complete Course in Magic is still one of the best ways to learn magic.

The seventies brought magic from all over the world into our homes. From Canada, Doug Henning burst onto the magic scene. His magic vision was the hippest. During the same time, a duo from Europe made their way to Las Vegas. Sigfried and Roy were just starting to be noticed in magic magazines and others in the magic world.

The eighties brought us a new way to see magic on televisions. Large illusions on the stage were no good enough anymore. David Copperfield made the Statue of Liberty vanish live before our very eyes. He walked thru the Great Wall of China. Finally he flew through the air and faced a fiery vortex unharmed. Sigfred and Roy were making Las Vegas THE magic capital of the world. (Sorry about that Colon, Michigan “The Magic Capital of the World”)

The nineties brought magic to more people than ever before. Magic specials, such as the world’s Greatest Magic, were appearing all over the television. Magic gained popularity with the success of the magic specials. Every fall around the holidays, one could look forward to a new batch of magic shows on television.

The turn of the century brought a new way of watching magic. David Blaine took magic off the stage and into the street. David Blaine’s first magic special, Street Magic, is one of the best magic I have every seen on television. In Las Vegas, Lance Burton has risen to the top of magical performers.

I look forward to new magicians that are up and coming. Each new magician brings a unique style to magic. I hope to see more new magicians on television as well. This is one of the best times to be involved in magic.

Magically yours,
