"Finally A Magic Dealer Gives The Criss Angel Mastermind Volume 1 - Coin in Can Magic Trick DVD The Review It Deserves!"

Criss Angel's Masterminds #1 - Quarter Through Soda Can

Reviewed By Ed Williams

I must say that I have been rather disappointed in the DVD’s being offered to the magic community lately. Although L&L Publishing continues to produce quality teaching videos in the DVD format, the majority of these are simply a change of format from VHS to DVD of videos that have been on the market for years with very little in the way of new original material.

With the advances in technology just about anybody can produce a DVD and there has been plenty of independent producers pop up. When it comes to these newcomers it’s pretty much “hit or miss”. I’m certain that there are DVD’s out there that are well worth the money but the odds of finding a good one out of the array of unknown artists and producers are diminishing.

Here’s one of the good ones. Criss Angel's Masterminds #1, Quarter in Soda Can.

I must admit I had little confidence in a magic DVD by a person that hangs from a helicopter by fishhooks. Although I’ve never considered stunts and magic to be that closely related, they are both performing art and even though I find such stunts boring, the general public eats it up as evidenced by the popularity of Criss Angel’s TV series on A&E.

This DVD and the interview that accompanies it have changed my mind about Criss Angel. I’ve decided that no…he’s not just another freaky guy using stunts and video editing to gain TV ratings. He is actually a dedicated magician. Although part of what he does is over the top and could only be pulled off in front of a camera and he does play the part of a person that most rational people would prefer to avoid if encountered on the street, he seems to be a person that is genuinely concerned with advancing the art of magic.

That should be enough about the man and my opinion; lets get on with the review of the DVD.

It is just as advertised; the effect is impressive, totally impromptu, and fairly easy to learn. All you need is any soda can and any quarter. I had the basic concept figured out just by watching the performance, but I’m definitely glad that I watched the very well done instructions. The handling is paramount to the success of the effect and they explain it superbly. I’m sure that word will get out pretty quickly on how this effect is accomplished, but if you want to do the effect and do it well, you will need the DVD. Every move and aspect of the effect is explained in great detail.

If you’re looking for an impressive effect that can be done anytime, anywhere, with just a little practice, you’ll love Masterminds #1 by Criss Angel.
